oscillation (2021)
Oscillation is a concept developed in Nathaniel Flagg’s Moving Image Course through the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. The project was completed over the span of two months, beginning with initial research on the history of stop-motion and culminating in a five second clip.
This project was a long time coming for me as I wanted to find a way to push the motion that I found present in my printmaking process. Rather than photographing individual frames on a stage in a traditional stop-motion fashion, I chose to “photograph” the frames through printing. Materials were inked and pressed and readjusted, totaling seventy individual frames.
The piece, for me, is both objective and non-objective. The structure of the polyester plate and vellum and the malleability of the fabric and thread interact in push and pull, creating a dance of sorts between otherwise inanimate objects.
